Micronized progesterone is bioidentical progesterone used for endometrial protection in women receiving estradiol, and selectively as a sleep- and mood-supportive agent in perimenopause.
Binds progesterone receptors to oppose estrogen-driven endometrial proliferation, supports GABAergic sedation centrally, and modulates sleep architecture.
What you need to know
Micronized progesterone is distinct from synthetic progestins (medroxyprogesterone acetate) in receptor specificity and side-effect profile. In women with an intact uterus on estradiol, progesterone is non-negotiable for endometrial safety. Oral micronized progesterone taken at bedtime produces a sedating, GABA-modulating metabolite (allopregnanolone) that can meaningfully improve sleep. Topical compounded progesterone is sometimes used but does not reliably achieve endometrial protection.
