What the reference actually says.

  • No — but it's limited. BMI is a population-level screening number that compares height and weight. It can't tell muscle from fat, doesn't account for visceral fat, and can misread athletic builds. BMR, TDEE, and body composition tell a more complete story.
  • Mifflin-St Jeor — the educationally accepted default. It estimates resting energy expenditure from sex, age, height, and weight. All results are estimates and rounded to the nearest 10 kcal.
  • TDEE multiplies your BMR by an activity factor: Sedentary ×1.2, Lightly active ×1.375, Moderately active ×1.55, Very active ×1.725, Athletic ×1.9. The result is your educational maintenance reference.
  • No. They are general educational estimates derived from TDEE and the goal you select. Calorie targets in a medical or athletic context should be discussed with a licensed provider or registered dietitian.
  • Body-fat percentage unlocks the lean-mass / fat-mass split and a sex-specific reference category (Essential, Athletic, Fitness, Average, Higher) — a far more useful read than BMI alone. If you don't have a measurement, leave it blank.
  • Sex-specific educational ranges. Men: Essential ≤5%, Athletic ≤13%, Fitness ≤17%, Average ≤24%, Higher >24%. Women: Essential ≤13%, Athletic ≤20%, Fitness ≤24%, Average ≤31%, Higher >31%. These are population references, not clinical targets.
  • Five educational categories. Subcutaneous: storage fat just under the skin. Visceral: deeper fat around abdominal organs — the strongest tissue-level signal for metabolic risk. White adipose: primary energy-storage tissue, endocrine-active. Brown adipose: thermogenic fat that burns energy as heat. Ectopic: fat stored in liver, muscle, or pancreas — tracks insulin-resistance patterns.
