What is morning cortisol (cortisol AM)?
Cortisol AM reflects morning adrenal output and a healthy cortisol awakening response. It is most meaningful when drawn between 7–9 AM.
Full answer
Cortisol AM captures the peak of the diurnal cortisol rhythm. A robust morning cortisol supports energy, glucose regulation, immune balance, and stress response. Both deficient and excessive morning cortisol are clinically meaningful: low cortisol AM raises adrenal insufficiency concerns, while elevated cortisol AM can reflect stress physiology, exogenous steroid use, or Cushing's syndrome. Within oMeds review, cortisol AM is interpreted alongside DHEA-S, ACTH (when ordered), sleep history, and clinical symptoms, and the 7–9 AM draw window matters.
