Androstenedione is produced by both the adrenal cortex and the gonads and is the immediate precursor to testosterone and estrone. Elevated androstenedione contributes to the workup of hyperandrogenism, PCOS, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and rare androgen-secreting tumors. Within oMeds review, androstenedione is interpreted alongside total testosterone, DHEA-S, 17-OH progesterone, and clinical symptoms. It is not part of baseline hormone panels and is ordered selectively when androgen excess is suspected.
