Topical vs oral finasteride — which is right for me?
Oral finasteride has the strongest evidence base for halting androgenetic alopecia. Topical finasteride lowers systemic DHT exposure and is preferred when systemic side-effect concerns dominate. Selection is provider-reviewed.
Full answer
Oral finasteride has the strongest evidence base for halting androgenetic alopecia and is widely used. Topical finasteride lowers systemic DHT exposure compared with oral, and is preferred when systemic side-effect concerns (sexual function, mood) are prominent or when the patient prefers a non-systemic option. Minoxidil is added in most plans. Female candidates are reviewed for alternatives where appropriate. Realistic expectations are framed and outcomes are tracked at recalibration.
Educational. Not a substitute for individualized provider review.
